Blast Furnace Slag Cement

Blast furnace slag cement is obtained by mixing Portland cement clinker, gypsum & blast furnace slag n suitable proportion and grinding.

5 Properties of Blast Furnace Slag Cement

Following are the 5 properties of blast furnace slag cement:
1. Its colour is blackish grey.

2. Its initial setting time is not less than 30 minutes & final setting time is not more than 10 hours.

3. When ordinary sand is used, its compressive strength shall not be less than 160 kg/cm2 & 220 kg/cm2 in 3 days & 7 days respectively.

4. It shall not have an expansion of more than 10 mm.

5. It residue by weight does not exceed 10% when tested on IS sieve no 9.

Uses of Blast Furnace Slag Cement

Blast furnace slag cement is used for the following purpose:
1. It is used for mass concreting works.

2. It can be used for any works except thin R.C.C works.

Advantages of Blast Furnace Slag Cement

Advantages of blast furnace cement are as follows:
1. It has a higher resistance to chemical attack & the sea water.

2. It has a low heat of hydration & lower shrinkage on drying.

3. It improves the water tightness & fire resistance qualities of concrete.
