About Prestressed concrete pavements

Pre-stressed concrete pavements

The pre-stressing technique is used now a day for construction of road pavements . The pre-stressed pavement can be built in continuous length up to 120 m .A width of 3.6 m is desirable and therefore longitudinal joints should be provided .

The minimum recommended thickness is 15 cm . A minimum value of 22 kg/cm² of pre-stress is recommended for 120 m long pre-stressed pavement .Pre-stressing is done by post tensioning method.

The construction of pre-stressed concrete pavements is difficult job and needs a skilled team. Any failure of anchor could be very severe. The loss in pre-stressing due to sub-grade restraint is one of the major problems in pre stressed concrete pavement construction.
